Hearing plays a vital role in a child’s development, from learning in the classroom to building friendships on the playground.
In-school hearing screenings, mandated in Virginia, are a great way to identify potential hearing problems before they interfere with a child’s academic success and social confidence. Here’s what to expect if your child participates in one of these screenings and what to do if concerns arise.
What Happens During a School Hearing Screening?
Hearing screenings are simple, non-invasive and usually take just a few minutes. Your child will typically sit in a quiet room, put on headphones and listen to a series of tones at different pitches and volumes. Each time they hear a sound, they respond by raising their hand or pressing a button.
The results are generally labeled as “pass” or “refer.” If your child does not pass, it doesn’t necessarily mean permanent hearing loss. It may simply be due to temporary issues like earwax buildup, fluid in the middle ear or recent noise exposure. However, a “refer” result means the school recommends further testing with an audiologist to determine if they need hearing aids.
Supporting a Child With Hearing Loss
Hearing loss doesn’t mean your child can’t thrive in school. Modern hearing aids and cochlear implants can dramatically improve a child’s ability to engage at school, enjoy hobbies and connect with friends and family at the Gosnold’s Hope Park playground.
Talking About Hearing Health With Your Child
Learning about hearing loss can feel overwhelming for children, but honest, reassuring conversations make a big difference. Let them know that needing treatment is nothing to be ashamed of and explain how tools like hearing aids can help them continue doing what they love.
You can try relating hearing aids to glasses. Glasses don’t mean a child is deficient or can’t have fun with other kids. They just mean that their eyes need a little extra help. Hearing aids are no different.
