A new study may offer further insight into the connection between hearing loss and dementia.
Hearing Loss Associated with Changes in Brain
The study, from The Carle Illinois College of Medicine, analyzed data from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database. Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia.
Researchers compared MRIs of people with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and hearing loss to those with AD and normal hearing. They discovered a higher incidence of shrinkage in the brainstem and cerebellum in patients with both hearing loss and AD.
While the researchers expected to find differences in the brain scans, the location of the shrinkage was surprising. They had expected participants with hearing loss to exhibit changes to the temporal lobe, as that is where the brain processes language and sound.
“This is a surprising finding but one that relates to newer studies that link Alzheimer’s Disease with dysfunction in auditory function which requires cerebellar activation,” said Susie Kwok, medical student and collaborator on the study.
The hope is that these new findings will be helpful in the early detection and treatment of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
The Connection Between Hearing Loss and Dementia
Previous studies have found that hearing loss may contribute to a faster rate of atrophy in the brain. This may happen for several reasons:
- The parts of your brain that process sound don’t get enough stimulation
- Cognitive overload from the brain having to work harder to understand sounds reduces brain function.
- Hearing loss makes it more likely for people to socially isolate from others, meaning you don’t engage in conversations as much. Isolation is thought to make dementia and cognitive decline more likely.
Can Hearing Aids Prevent Cognitive Decline?
Hearing aids may be able to prevent or delay cognitive decline in people with hearing loss. They do this by easing the cognitive load on your brain and providing additional auditory stimulation that may prevent atrophy.
They also help boost your confidence in social situations. When you aren’t worried about your ability to follow conversations, you’re much more likely to keep your weekly date with friends at Firehouse Coffee.
