We all know that air quality is important for our lungs and overall health. However, research has shown that exposure to poor air quality may increase your risk of hearing loss.
Research on Air Quality and Hearing Loss
A recent study analyzed data from over 15,000 adults in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey. The study found that exposure to air pollution with ambient small particles (PM10) was significantly associated with an increased risk of hearing loss. Regular exposure to air pollution with carbon monoxide and dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide was also deemed a risk factor for hearing loss.
Protecting Yourself From Air Pollution
Unfortunately, air pollution is not an individual problem but a global one. That said, there are steps you can take to help minimize your exposure, when possible, to keep you and your family safe. These includes:
- Checking air quality levels in your area and staying indoors when they are unsafe
- Avoid exercising or other strenuous activity when pollution levels are high
- Invest in a quality air purifier and humidifier for optimal air conditions in your home
Make Your Hearing Health a Priority
There are many ways to help protect your ears and minimize your risk of hearing loss. Some of the best ways include:
- Avoid prolonged exposure to loud noise or wearing hearing protection devices like earplugs, earmuffs or custom earmolds when you are in a noisy environment.
- Listen to music or watch TV at a reasonable volume when at home.
- Eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise to help prevent illnesses like heart disease that can damage the blood vessels of the inner ear.
- Get a hearing test if you are struggling with your hearing or would like a baseline to see where you are at.
Treating Your Hearing Loss
If you have hearing loss, the earlier it’s treated, the better. The most common treatment for hearing loss is hearing aids. Your audiologist will work with you to determine what style works best for you and help you customize your settings to match your individual needs.
Treating your hearing loss makes it easier to enjoy all the little moments that make life so great, from listening to the birds chirp outside while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee to laughing with your grandchildren over slices at Andrea’s Pizza.
