Many factors can increase your risk of developing hearing loss, such as aging, exposure to loud noise or certain viral illnesses. New research indicates that low levels of vitamin D could make it more likely that you develop hearing loss as well.
The Importance of Vitamin D
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that your body needs to help build and maintain strong bones. It also has antioxidant properties and supports your immune system, muscle function and brain activity, among other vital roles.
You can find vitamin D in fatty fish, like salmon and sardines. Additionally, foods like milk and cereal are often fortified with it. Our bodies also make vitamin D by absorbing direct sunlight.
Low Vitamin D Levels Linked to Hearing Loss
A recent study examining the link between hearing loss and vitamin D deficiency looked at data from 3,489 adults aged 50 years or older. Researchers found a significant association between those with vitamin D deficiencies and sensorineural hearing loss. They concluded that vitamin D may play a significant role in the auditory system.
What Should You Do if Your Vitamin D Levels Are Low?
If you are concerned about your vitamin D levels, speak with your primary care provider. They may recommend taking a multivitamin with vitamin D or a standalone supplement in addition to eating foods rich in the vitamin and getting adequate sunlight (where possible). Do not try supplementing on your own without talking to your doctor, nor should you take levels higher than the recommended maximum dose, as it could lead to potential health complications.
Signs of Hearing Loss
It’s important to know the early signs of hearing loss so that you can seek treatment as soon as possible. Schedule a hearing test if you experience any of the following:
- Sounds seem muffled
- You’re asking others to repeat themselves more frequently
- You’re experiencing a ringing in your ears (tinnitus)
- You are having trouble following conversations, especially in places with background noise or multiple people speaking at once, like Marker 20 or other popular Hampton restaurants
- Others have commented on your hearing
Hearing Loss Treatment Options
If you have hearing loss, your audiologist will likely recommend hearing aids. They will work with you to find a pair that improves your hearing in different listening environments as well as fits in with your individual lifestyle and preferences.
