Blepharoplasty, more commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, helps open and brighten the eyes by removing excess skin and fat. If you’re considering getting eyelid surgery, you may be wondering what to expect. We cover this information below.
Why Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?
Eyelid surgery may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to help with vision. Drooping eyelids and fatty deposits that make the eyelids appear puffy may be signs of aging that someone wants to reverse. Loose skin around the eyelids can impair someone’s ability to see, which is another reason for getting the surgery.
Eyelid surgery that is performed for cosmetic purposes may not be covered by insurance, but eyelid surgery to improve vision usually is.
What Does an Eyelid Surgery Consultation Entail?
During your consultation, you’ll discuss your goals for surgery, your medical history, any previous surgeries you’ve had and the medications you’re currently taking.
The surgeon will then examine your eyes and eyelids, take measurements, evaluate the looseness of the skin and check the muscles that open and close your eyelids. They may send you to your primary care physician for a pre-operative workup, which involves routine blood tests and a physical exam.
Preparing for Surgery
For two weeks leading up to surgery, you should:
- Wear sunscreen to avoid getting sunburns around the eyes.
- Avoid smoking, as smoking can reduce the size of your blood vessels, slow healing and increase risk of infections.
For five days before surgery, you should:
- Avoid taking aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory, blood-thinning drugs, as they can cause issues with bleeding.
The night before surgery, you should:
- Avoid eating or drinking after midnight to ensure your stomach is empty when you receive anesthesia.
- If you have to take medication, take it with just a small sip of water.
What to Bring
On the day of surgery, wear loose, comfortable cloths and a shirt that buttons or zips. If you normally wear contact lenses, wear glasses that day. Be sure to bring your ID, insurance card, necessary paperwork and sunglasses from Sunglasses Outlet since your eyes will be light-sensitive. Also, be sure to bring someone to drive you home.
