Hearing aids are essential medical devices that amplify sounds in your environment to a level your ears can easily detect. All hearing aids have the same basic parts: a microphone that picks up the sounds around you, a processor that amplifies them to the exact specifications your hearing loss requires and a receiver that delivers amplified sound to your ears.

While the technology in basic hearing aids is much more limited, they still are great at helping you hear; however, advanced hearing aids have even more to offer. We review some more differences between basic and advanced hearing aids below.

The main difference between basic and advanced hearing aids is that basic hearing aids are operated manually. This means to adjust the volume or switch between programs, you’ll need to push physical buttons on the hearing aids.

Another difference is that there is less customization ability for basic hearing aids, as they are designed to help you in more general environments and situations.

Most basic hearing aids have directional microphones: one set that picks up sounds in front of you and one set that picks up sounds all around you, to help you localize sound. That is about all these microphones can do, however.

Basic hearing aids have some wireless options, most commonly telecoils and FM system compatibility.

Advanced Hearing Aids

As stated previously, advanced hearing aids are more automatic than their basic counterparts. Some even have geotagging features that remember the settings you prefer in certain places, and they will automatically adjust to that preferred program.

In addition to directional microphones, advanced hearing aids can focus on important speech sounds and reduce distracting background noise like wind when you’re out hiking.

Not only do advanced hearing aids offer the wireless options listed above, most also boast Bluetooth connectivity, so you can connect to your favorite devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops and maybe even your TV, and stream audio straight to your ears.
