Experiencing hearing loss doesn’t have to slow you down over summer. Follow our tips below to make the most of this summer with hearing aids.

Keep Your Hearing Aids Dry

There’s nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than taking a dip at the Hampton Aquatics Center. However, you should be careful with your hearing aids if you do so. We recommend removing your hearing aids before going near the water – even if you don’t plan to swim, you can still get splashed. Put them somewhere safe, like a carrying case inside a backpack.

Additionally, hearing aids can get wet from summer sweat. If you tend to get a little sweaty, you can invest in a sleeve or sweatband for your hearing aids to keep sweat from infiltrating the devices. You can also invest in a dehumidifier to store them in at night to remove any moisture.

Avoid Losing Your Hearing Aids

Summer is a great time to go for hikes, but many people who wear hearing aids worry about losing them on the trail. You can purchase a hearing aid “lanyard,” which allows you to clip your hearing aids to your clothing so if they fall out, they’re still attached to your person.

If you’re traveling – whether by plane, car, train or trail – be sure to keep your hearing aids in a consistent place when you take them out at night to avoid misplacing them.

Keep Your Devices Clean

Take your hearing aids out before spraying sunscreen or bug spray, as these chemicals can be damaging to your devices. In addition, you should take out your hearing aids before hitting the sand, as the tiny granules can infiltrate the device and cause problems.

You should always clean your devices at the end of each day, but this is especially true if you’re camping or riding quads or dirt bikes, as your hearing aids are more likely to get dusty or dirty during these activities.
