Their job is to catch germs that are inhaled through the nose to prevent illnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the adenoids are fighting off bacteria or viruses, they can become swollen. This can cause pain and interfere <a href=\"https:\/\/hamptonroadsent.com\/sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with sleeping<\/a> and breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Symptoms of Enlarged Adenoids?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of enlarged adenoids include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Breathing through the mouth.<\/li><li>Dry mouth.<\/li><li>Cracked lips.<\/li><li>Sore throat.<\/li><li>Runny\/stuffy nose.<\/li><li>Nasally voice.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/hamptonroadsent.com\/sleep\/snoring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Snoring<\/a>.<\/li><li>Poor sleep quality.<\/li><li>Frequent or persistent ear infections.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Are the Adenoids Removed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A physical exam and medical history are taken before surgical removal of the adenoids is recommended. A doctor may recommend adenoid removal if you or your child experiences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Repeated infections of the adenoids that don\u2019t respond to antibiotics.<\/li><li>Buildup of fluid in the ear due to adenoid swelling.<\/li><li>Recurring ear infections that don\u2019t respond to antibiotics.<\/li><li>Snoring or sleep apnea related to adenoid problems.<\/li><li>Excessive daytime sleepiness related to adenoid problems.<\/li><li>Behavior or learning problems due to poor sleep.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is Adenoid Removal Performed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before performing <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaotolaryngology\/article-abstract\/2683621\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adenoid removal surgery<\/a>, the doctor will first place you or your child under general anesthesia. It\u2019s important to avoid having any food or drinks leading up to the procedure in order to prevent vomiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the surgery, the doctor uses a lighted instrument to see inside the throat and nose. The adenoids are accessed through the back of the throat; no external incisions need to be made.
